The potential ninth game reported here about a month ago has fallen through according to a source within the Hobart Athletic Department. Unfortunately, with only 71 days until kick-off, it appears as though Hobart will play it's first eight game regular season since 1978 (that's 33 years for those math challenged individuals like myself).
The good news is that Hobart still has the opportunity to play a ninth game (or more?) if they win the Liberty League title and earn a post-season NCAA tournament berth (which would be their first trip back to the Field of 32 since the 2008 season). Another possibility would be an ECAC post-season "bowl game" if the Statesmen finish the season 6-2 or 5-3 (last year's 5-4 mark proved insufficient to earn a bid in comparison to other ECAC-bowl eligible teams). One thing in Hobart's favor is the fact the Statesmen welcome back 40 returning lettermen and 15 starters making them an early favorite to win the LL championship and accompanying NCAA bid.
That said it is disappointing for both the fans and the players, especially the seniors, to have only two games in September and effectively THREE bye weeks in the 2011 season. All in all, this has been one of the toughest off-seasons for the Statesmen in many years.

Hobart Goes to the Top Drawer to Enroll Trumansburg Scholar Athlete
The Odessafile.com reports that Trumansburg's (NY) Tucker Randle intends to play football at Hobart this fall. Randle played DE for the Blue Raiders and averaged nine tackles per game (according to MaxPreps.com). Tucker also scored a safety in a 27-12 win over Edison (Elmira Heights, NY) and was an All-State Track high jumper, as well as a top student at THS.

Tucker Randle is a Trumansburg senior who excels in football, indoor track and spring track. He was a 1st Team Section IV All-Star in football, and is an exceptional High Jumper in track, winning Section IV indoor and outdoor titles last year, as well as sharing in a Section IV 4x100 Relay title. He is a High Honor student with a 3.6 grade-point average, is a member of Boys State, the Green Team Environmental Club and the Outdoor Education Club, is a math tutor, and recipient of a Student of Distinction award. He coaches Pee Wee football and track, is on the community Earth Day Cleanup Committee, has helped rebuild the overlook at Buttermilk Falls, is on the Farmers Market Building Committee, and has visited Guatemala to help build a school for children -- a trip he plans to repeat this year. He will attend Hobart College, where he plans to play football.
All in all, Tucker sounds like a great kid and I'd like to be the one of the first alumni to welcome him to Hobart. Based on all of the above he sounds like he'll make a great Statesman.

NY First Team All State OL to Enroll at Hobart
The Livingston County News (Geneseo, NY) reports that Caledonia-Mumford SR OL Matt Riggi intends to play football for the Statesmen this fall.
The 6' 4" 225lb offensive guard / defensive tackle was named to the Class D All State first team. Riggi helped the Cal-Mum Raiders to a 12-2 record in the 2010 season.

Interestingly enough two of Riggi's teammates, who he played alongside on the DL during their HS careers, ended up at Saint John Fisher College. Hobart will face the Cardinals on September 24th.

Ninth game for football in the works for Hobart
Word from Geneva is a potential match-up for the Statesmen this September may be coming to fruition - and I am not talking about a "scrimmage" with Cornell as reported earlier this year.
More on this as it develops, but Hobart could fill out it's 2011 slate with an 9th opponent as early as next week.

Bryant Defensive Lineman Transfers to Hobart
Adam Novak '14 will don #97 and suit up as a defensive tackle this fall for Hobart according to HWSAthletics.com.
Novak transferred in from Bryant University (RI) and originally hails from Longmeadow, MA. The 6' 2" 270 lber was a two year letterman at LHS helping his team to consecutive league titles and MA "Super Bowl" state championships. He also starred on the basketball team which won the Western MA State title.
Adam's dad, Peter, was a former college football player at American International (Springfield, MA) and also coached at the University of New Haven (CT).
Although DT is where he is listed on the roster as of today, I hope the coaches give Novak a shot at DE given the Statesmen have several returning players at DT but no returning ends.
Regardless, I'd like to be the first to welcome Adam to Hobart. Looks like the defense will be very strong with the number of recruits coming in at LB and the defensive line.
Just over 100 days until kickoff vs. Dickinson....GO HOBART!

Hobart Names Captains for 2011 Campaign
Hobart will look to three rising seniors, TE Greg Clifford, WR Garth Muratori and DB Drake Woodard to lead the Statesmen on the gridiron this fall.

Hobart lacrosse recruit considering a return to the gridiron
Brendan Kessler, a senior at Red Lion High (York, PA), is a lacrosse standout at midfield/attack and has made a verbal committment to Hobart College to play lacrosse and attend school in the Fall of 2011.
Aside from being an All-American in lacrosse, Kessler also earned YAIAA Division I all-star honors after racking up 1,030 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns. He also lead his team in tackles as a safety. Apparently Kessler had offers to walk-on at Temple, Towson and St. Francis, but fortunately for Hobart, he chose to stick with lacrosse.
That said it's no surprise that Coach Cragg and the Statesmen football team are also VERY interested in this student-athlete given his size (6' 4") and DI caliber speed.
There is a long tradition of two-sport lacrosse / football players in Geneva, most recently Mike Lazore '11 and Justin Hager '09 starred in both sports for the Statesmen.
Hopefully we'll see Kessler give DIII football a try prior to joining the Statesmen's DI lacrosse program.
